Russia and Japan agreed on the project to build the East Siberia-Pacific Ocean oil pipeline. Alexandre Garese, expert on Russian and CIS commercial law, dubbed the project a very positive development, which will be advantageous for both parties. Garese noted that the project will enable Russia to enter into Asia-Pacific energy markets while reducing Japan's dependence on Middle East oil supplies. At a final press-conference at the end of G8 summit in St. Petersburg Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi was quoted by RIA Novosti as saying that "Russia and Japan agreed to cooperate on the pipeline from East Siberia to the Pacific."
