Introduction
One way in which leisure is believed to make a contribution to people's well-being is by helping them maintain their physical and mental health (Caldwell & Smith, 1988; Coleman & Iso-Ahola, 1993; Iso-Ahola, 1988). There is some evidence to support this belief (Coleman & Iso-Ahola, 1993). However, little research has been directed at investigating how leisure participation leads to this benefit. Clarification of the processes whereby leisure provides health benefits will facilitate a better appreciation of the contribution of leisure to quality of life.
