Two years ago a monumental work by Jasper Johns sold to a private collector for $9.5 million at Sotheby's in New York. Part of a series of works entitled 0 Through 9 (1960-61), this technically masterful, seminal piece made history by becoming the most expensive drawing ever to be sold at auction, doubling the previous record for any work on paper (Fig. 5). Although this reveals the strength of the demand not only for Johns and his works in all media but also for modern drawings, it is not representative of the market as a whole, which is as variable and complex as the art it encompasses.
