Jul. 21--"Raiders of the Lost Ark," the 1981 movie that introduced the world to Indiana Jones, was an attempt by top-rank, ultra-savvy filmmakers with all the modern tools at their disposal, and post-modern sensibilities to boot, to re-create the boyhood wonders of cheap, fast, unsophisticated Saturday afternoon adventure serials.
It can seem a dubious idea. But, looking at "Raiders" again, in a new print to mark the film's 25 anniversary, I think the movie wears very well. Back in 1981, I thought it was technically astonishing but somewhat hollow, a greased-slide toboggan-ride of a picture that shot you through its super-slick ...
