I read with great interest the complete and thoughtful response to the question on epinephrine disposal (Clinical Issues, vol 83, February 2006). At PharmEcology Associates, we deal with this issue frequently, and have found ORs to be a source of significant volumes of waste epinephrine due primarily to orthopedic and ophthalmic surgeries. Generating more than 1 kg (2.2 lbs) per month causes the hospital to become a large-quantity hazardous waste generator, which is significant in itself.
