Jul. 21--Public safety ought not to be subordinated to economic development - that is, if you wish to call the landfill business economic development.
Some do, of course, by necessity. Depending on your community's relative prospects, strip-mining, prison construction and landfills can be perfectly acceptable ways to create jobs and improve local finances.
That happens to be the situation in King and Queen, a charming but less than economically robust county of about 6,500 Virginians where a privately owned landfill pumps more revenue into county coffers than residential real estate. But it's getting dangerous with 150 to 175 huge trucks daily ...
