Jul. 22--Years ago Fort Walton Beach was the "big city" and claimed Shalimar, Mary Esther, Cinco Bayou, Wright and Ocean City as its satellites. Lucky or not, Destin was merely a fishing village, home to dock rats, tacky T-shirt shops and empty beaches.

Not anymore.

Now, Destin is the trendy, upscale place to be and Fort Walton Beach, or so I've been told, is the poor side of "town," the "Jerry Springer Show" to Destin's "Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous."

Not true? For grins I Googled "Fort Walton Beach" and "Destin" with various combinations of the word "Florida." In every case, Destin clobbered F-Dub. Even the ...
