The Ngorongoro Conservation Area (NCA) in northern Tanzania, named a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, encompasses the Olduvai Gorge, the Ngorongoro Crater National Park, and the rangelands of Masai pastoralists. The enlightened policy of joint landuse, which attempts to meet the needs of the diverse users of the region, is currently under debate. This debate and the recognition of the importance of the NCA by UNESCO were the catalyst to prepare this book.
