As the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) takes over Gaza, one is reminded of the declaration first made in Israel by Golda Meir's government in 1972: "The Gaza Strip is an inseparable part of the State of Israel." If implemented successfully, the peace accord between Israel and the Palestinians will vindicate critics of that pronouncement and all those who believed that neither declarations, nor settlements, nor land seizures would transform the West Bank and Gaza Strip into permanent parts of the Jewish state. Although now the thought may seem unimaginable, the same principle applies to expanded East Jerusalem.
