Jul. 23--When the creeks are flowing, the Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve in south-central Colorado is one of the most unusual places on earth. You can stand in surging cool streams and see sand dunes rising in waves up to 750 feet high and resting against a mountain range. "For Colorado, being landlocked without big lakes, it is unusual to come to a place where there is sand and dunes and water," said Carol Sperling, chief of interpretation and visitor services at the park.
