Few camera bulbs flashed as the models slithered seductively down the ramp. There weren't gaggles of fashionistas draped in the latest fashion fads jostling for a seat. Instead there was a slow trickling of diehard fashion supporters making their way into a large tent set up in the courtyard of what was then called Sandton Square.

Empty seats reserved for members of the press remained unoccupied. Fashion designers wrapped in warm winter knits gathered inside the tent and shared a single bottle of champagne, wondering whether there was anything worth celebrating.
