The best thing about Gugu Mzimba: The Spirit of Gerard Sekoto is the use of the full space of the theatre. It is used as a loose map of the world of Gerald Sekoto, the artist who chose to live in Paris for 40 years, between 1949 and 1993. Here his studio is up towards the roof; creation takes place at the same level as the visitations of spirits and figures of conscience. Downstairs is Sekoto's public realm: the cafe where Sekoto played and sang his own music and that of others. (The musical overlooks the fact that he did it all his Parisian life.) This public area is also the site of the hospital to which his mental instability brought him.
