"The Great Gatsby," F. Scott Fitzgerald's Jazz Age novel of love, loss and American dreaming, premiered Friday in a new stage adaptation that provoked historic excitement.
The production is the first play on the Wurtele Thrust Stage in the new $125 million Guthrie Theater. Adapted by Simon Levy and staged with decorum by David Esbjornson, "Gatsby" is a clean, imaginative and sometimes surreal work, with steady and sure performances by a capable acting company whose numbers sometimes seemed too small for the task (particularly in one of the party scenes).
