OK space fans, flash back to a day and time 30 years ago.
At NASA Langley Research Center that morning, 500 people leaned forward in their seats toward a screen where live images were being broadcast from the Jet Propulsion Lab in California.
"Touchdown, we have touchdown!" the announcer called, and minutes later, the visual proof appeared on the screen.
Champagne corks popped in Pasadena. Tears flowed in Hampton.
