In addition to being a successful politician, Uruguay's current president is a physician-an oncologist, in fact. Another interesting fact about him says something about Uruguay's economic position.

In spite of the obvious demands of his presidential duties, he still sees patients.

Whatever his personal reasons may be-perhaps he finds that this keeps him grounded to a certain extent-the message it sends to Uruguay's citizens is that the country's leadership has not forgotten the "of the people" part of the democratic process. It is an emblem of practicality that appears to have abandoned other left leaning leaders in the region.
