The increasingly violent Middle East of 2006 isn't the pretext for the third world war that Americans of Cold War vintage expected. To them, World War III resembled Harry Potter's Lord Voldemort _ a specter not to be mentioned aloud, yet intensely knowable for its menace and fury.
