Jul. 25--EAST HADDAM -- As a descendant of freed slave Venture Smith, Coralynne Jackson treasures the extraordinary story of the kidnapped African prince who worked his way out of chains to become a very prosperous Connecticut merchant and landowner. "Our connection to Venture is very special, and we'd like to know as much about him as we can," said Jackson who lives in Hartford. "That includes where he's from, because that's where we're from. Knowing that tells us a little bit more about who we are. That's something that was stolen from most slaves."
