Jul. 25--The bedside machine hummed and pumped. Slushy white liquid snaked through the feeding tube. And Lynne Trease sensed that her pale 20-month-old was perking up. "Oh, she needs this," Lynne told the nurses at Children's Hospital in Omaha. "Don't touch her. Don't change a thing." The Clearwater, Neb., woman's struggle to feed her starving daughter was nearly over. Lynne and her husband, Rich, had taken Nikki in when she was an infant. Born without most of her brain, Nikki struggled with feeding after about six months, gaining only 2 pounds in a year. Resorting to a feeding tube made Lynne feel like a failure. But ...
