Even protectors of the First Amendment and political progressives felt bound to nod in dismay when Dan Rather, who represented the best in CBS next to Walter Cronkite, could not, during the final days of the 2004 presidential campaign, substantiate the authenticity of letters and documents, which repeated the well known saga of how our president avoided service in Vietnam.
