Along the Gunflint Trail -- The Cavity Lake wildfire in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness "has changed the landscape out there, and it's going to be shocking when you see it," a Forest Service official warned residents and vacationers Sunday.
"Give yourself a chance to cry, if you need," said Dennis Nietzke, supervisor of the Superior National Forest. "It's hard not to get a little emotional. One guy told me he lost a lot of friends out there" when millions of trees burned.
The fire was 30 percent contained as of late Sunday afternoon, said Peter D'Aquanni, information officer with the Minnesota Interagency Fire Center.
