This extended review of new editions of out-of-print novels, published by Birmingham University Press and Black Apollo Press, assesses their contribution to the late Victorian and early Modernist canon. These largely neglected works testify to the iconoclastic impetus of the period in their revisionary view of the act of writing and its relationship to the examination and reconstruction of the self and society. In addition, they reveal the complex connections between sexual desire, personal fulfillment, and the prevailing discourses of race, class, and gender in the complex interim between two major literary periods.
