SAN FRANCISCO _ With little fanfare but loads of optimism, San Francisco took a major step forward Wednesday to becoming the U.S. candidate city for the 2016 Summer Olympics.

The U.S. Olympic Committee narrowed the field to the Bay Area, Los Angeles and Chicago as the cities it would consider should the group mount a campaign to win the first Summer Games in America since 1996. Houston and Philadelphia _ the other cities who submitted bids _ were eliminated.

"I like the whole idea of the silver medal in 2012 and the gold medal in 2016," said Anne Cribbs, president of the Bay Area Sports Organizing Committee.
