The DRC is one of the biggest countries in Africa and potentially the richest, on account of its mineral resources. But it suffered hugely during European colonisation in the 19th and 20th centuries and has been torn apart by violence since independence

GEOGRAPHY: It is Africa's third-largest country after Sudan and Algeria. Covering 2 345 000sq km, it is almost as big as western Europe. The capital, Kinshasa, is at the mouth of the Congo River.

It borders nine countries - Central African Republic and Sudan to the north; Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi and Tanzania to the east; Zambia and Angola to the south; and Republic of Congo to the west.
