Visa USA wants merchants to get used to new mandates for handling PIN-debit transactions, and the card association recently took several actions designed to help them.
Visa is distributing to merchants what it describes as "best practices" for the handling of sensitive data, including codes used to encrypt PINs as they are keyed into point-of-sale terminals. The best practices also pertain to the storage of encrypted transactions, or so-called PIN blocks, and to sensitive data obtained electronically from magnetic stripes on the backs of cards when swiped through POS terminals. Such data include cardholders' names, card numbers and card-expiration dates.
