A slightly larger apple crop than in 2005 is being forecast this year in the EU-25. Initial estimates released ahead of the 2006 Prognosfruit Congress on August 10-12 in Budapest, indicate harvests markedly smaller in the EU-15 but considerably larger in the New Member States (NMS).
Dessert apple supplies are set to be tight compared with 2005/06, but more cider apples will be available. A small decline is also seen for pears, it added.
For the second time since 2003 the total EU-15 crop is likely to come in under 7 million tonnes.
