Ten years ago Yugoslavia was the site of the Winter Olympic Games. Seven venues for sports as diverse as figure skating and downhill skiing lay within 13 miles of the center of Sarajevo, the mountain-ringed headquarters for the games. Picture-postcard images of the city, with its Turkish domes and minarets, were sent throughout the world via television, newspappers, and magazines. Sportswriters came to speak of the "Spirit of Sarajevo", a rare East-meets-West blend of good companionship and easy cooperation.
