Lloyd Richards, a pioneering theater director and educator who directed the legendary Broadway production of A Raisin in the Sun, has died of heart failure. He was 87.
Richards held several positions in American theater that propelled him to break through barriers to hold rare power. He was the director of the National Playwrights Conference at the Eugene O'Neill Theater Center in Waterford, CT, (1968-1999) for over 30 years; the dean of the Yale School of Drama and artistic director of the Yale Repertory Theatre (1979-1991).
