On a crisp, sunny day, as the wind barely rippled the surface of the Hudson, photographer Roy Round and I drove north from New York City to a quiet, beautiful spot that afforded breathtaking views of the mighty river. Manhattan might have been a thousand miles away, so deep were we in wilderness. Our mission was to photograph and talk to Mikhail Baryshnikov, the dancer who beyond all others epitomizes the supreme art of virtuosic male dancing.
As he greeted us with a brief nod and a handshake, it was hard to believe that this slight figure dressed in workaday jeans and nondescript sweater, rubbing his eyes in the morning sun, was the god of dance who has ...
