Shirley Chisholm was the first Black, male or female, to actively campaign for presidency within the two-party system on this day. She came in fourth at the Democratic National Convention that year, garnering 152 democratic delegates. Born in Brooklyn, she graduated cum laude from Brooklyn College and got her master's from Columbia University. Her career started as a nursery school teacher; she later became an educational consultant with the Bureau of Child Welfare in New York City.
