Herlihy, a denizen of Hull, MA, and a look-alike of Michael Caine, is a lifetime scholar of the bicycle. He started as a teenager in the 1970s and kept up his research until the present to produce this history of the two-wheel "mechanical horse." His reports on the development of the bicycle have been published in the New York Times, Boston Globe, and numerous periodicals; he has received several awards, and served as curator of the "Bicycle Takes Off" traveling exhibit on bicycle history.
