Toyota, already the top producer of gasoline-electric hybrid cars, plans to develop a "plug-in" hybrid that could travel even greater distances without using its gasoline engine.
The president of Toyota North America, Jim Press, said the company is also "strongly considering" US sales of flexible-fuel vehicles capable of running on gasoline or E85, a blend of 85% ethanol and 15% gasoline.
Up to now hybrids sold by Toyota and others have recharged their batteries when the brakes are applied. Plug-in hybrids can also be recharged by plugging them into a normal electricity outlet, greatly extending the range of the electric motor.
