Aug. 1--Steve Friesen kidded the onlooker who believed Friesen's final putt Monday looked easy. "You didn't have to putt it," the Lincoln pro said. That 5-footer for birdie on the first hole of sudden death put Friesen into the Cox Classic field as one of 14 Monday qualifiers. They complete the field of 156 that begins play Thursday at Champions Run. Also qualifying Monday were Justin Herron of Omaha and former Omahan Ryan Vermeer. Herron, an assistant at Ironwood Golf and Country Club, shot 65 to lead the qualifying there for seven spots.
