Visiting double bass player Mlungisi Gegana teamed up with two local guys, Valentia Ferlito on keys and Paki Poloeole on drums, to give listeners at the Suncoast Jazz Session on Sunday a run for their jazz money.
The trio played only two standards and then concentrated on Gegana's original tunes which have been recorded in his debut album, One Step Forward. The double bass is a tricky instrument and there is no hiding behind it - you can either play it or you're trying to. Gegana happily fits into the first category.
This trio gave a fine concert, honouring the principals of jazz and enjoying themselves to boot.
