Aug. 2--Brian Tierney, chief executive officer of the investors' group that bought The Inquirer, the Philadelphia Daily News and Philly.com in June, now will also take on the role of the newspapers' publisher, but not the title, after the resignation yesterday of Joe Natoli.

"I don't see any urge to fill" the publisher's job until at least the fall, Tierney said. "We've got a great team. We'll be fine."

Also, because management is "asking the unions to find ways to economize" in talks for a new contract, Tierney said, "it would probably be most appropriate" for him "to take on both jobs for now."
