Aug. 2--Gov. Rendell and Mayor Street both strongly objected yesterday to an Independence National Historical Park plan to erect a seven-foot-high fence through Independence Square, the site where the Declaration of Independence was publicly read for the first time on July 8, 1776.
"I think it makes absolutely no sense, and to the extent I can try to turn it around, I'm going to try," Rendell said following festivities marking the opening of the refurbished Franklin Square. "It makes no bloody sense at all."
Street said he was "opposed to the fence."
"We don't want people to come to the city of Philadelphia ...
