IT is a poignant roll of honour reminiscent of those recording the ultimate sacrifice of men in war. The first entry is Thomas Joseph Harris, a storekeeper, who died on November 27, 1883, just 16 years old when he fell into the Forth and drowned. The final name is that of Francis James Watt, a rigger, who died similarly on January 17, 1890. He was 22.
In the seven years separating their deaths, at least 61 others found a place on the roll, their names now long forgotten by history but immortalised in one of the world's most iconic structures. They were the men who died building the Forth Bridge.
