Aug. 4--Arnaldo Mendez was in his mid-20s, married with two children, when he left his native Cuba in 1962. Lourdes Rodriguez was 6 months old when her family left the island three years earlier after Cuba underwent a radical transformation. They had different experiences but both share a desire to see Cuba free of Fidel Castro, the ailing Marxist dictator who has ruled Cuba for 47 years. Monday, Castro underwent intestinal surgery and his 75-year-old brother, defense minister Raul Castro, assumed temporary control of the government. Beyond that admission, the Cuban government has remained typically tight-lipped.
