Article: NT could offer cable easier entry into telephony. (Northern Telecom Inc.; cable TV)

New modulation techniques are challenging assumptions about the digital carrying capacity of cable systems, opening the way for more flexible allocations of bandwidth and for broader industry participation in telephony.

Northern Telecom, for example, is working on an application of a technology known as discrete multitone (DMT), which developers say could support telephony over a far greater percentage of cable systems than most experts anticipated. The key, officials said, is the robustness of the modulation scheme, which expands the distance the telephone signal can travel over coax.

Several network system and chip manufacturers are also working on a new ...
