When Mr. Pickwick chose to go to the Fleet debtor's prison rather than pay Dodson and Fogg, Dodson and Fogg tried to get their fee from Mrs. Bardell. When she refused to pay, they delivered her to the Fleet. Sam immediately sent for Mr. Pickwick's attorney who acquired a letter from Mrs. Bardell stating that Pickwick was not guilty of breach of promise. Even though he was stubbornly determined not to pay Dodson and Fogg anything, the letter was important to him, so he paid her fees and she was released. She continued to rent rooms to gentlemen, but never again brought suit for breach of promise.
