When Laura Ingalls was a child, most people in the United States lived east of the Mississippi River. Most Americans who lived in "the West" were American Indians. Pioneers like Laura's family lived very different lives from most American families. These pioneers survived by making their own clothes, growing crops, and hunting animals for meat and skins.
