The deadline for the Doha Round of trade talks is to be delayed until mid-August, in a last-ditch attempt to give WTO members the maximum possible time to agree a compromise deal on the Round.
The move was agreed informally at last weekend's G8 meeting in St Petersburg, during which WTO chief Pascal Lamy addressed world leaders on the need to accelerate the flagging Doha talks.
The new deadline implies that talks will have to continue into the traditional holiday month of August, forcing trade negotiators to cancel their summer holiday plans.
