The women walked slowly across the backyard, holding small, Y-shaped rods at the ends of their extended arms.
When they reached a certain point, their rods pointed downward and the women stopped.
Those rods pointed them to an underground pipe, according to Howard Cutter, whose wife, Bess, was teaching dowsing techniques to a small group of women in her Chimney Hill backyard one recent day.
Bess Cutter defines the ancient practice of dowsing as "the human ability to engage the mind" to detect energy.
