Ivory Coast President Felix Houphouet-Boigny, Africa's longest-ruling leader, recently died at age 88 of prostate cancer.

Houphouet-Boigny (pronounced oof-FWAY bwahn-YEE), was also the third longest serving leader in the world, after North Korean leader Kim II Sung and Fidel Castro of Cuba.

The African president's death was announced by Prime Minister Alassane Ouattara in a televised speech. Ouattara wept as he announced the death of Ivory Coast's only ruler since it gained independence from France in 1960.
