Aug. 6--An English professor at the University of Missouri-Columbia has turned her 15-year-old master's thesis into a book about her personal experience with an environmental disaster. Karen Piper, who grew up on the fringes of the dried-up lake bed of Owens Lake in California, has authored "Left in the Dust," an account of the troubling effects left over from the massive diversion of water for Los Angeles. The book is a systematic approach to the same story outlined in the movie "Chinatown," in which powerful forces stole water from rural areas of California to foster development in Los Angeles.
