Aug. 6--An English professor at the University of Missouri-Columbia has turned her 15-year-old master's thesis into a book about her personal experience with an environmental disaster. Karen Piper, who grew up on the fringes of the dried-up lake bed of Owens Lake in California, has authored "Left in the Dust," an account of the troubling effects left over from the massive diversion of water for Los Angeles.
