Audrey Hepburn's head, I always thought, was the most beautiful object in movies - akin to those elongated Modigliani maidens or stone busts of Nefertiti, the long-necked queen of ancient Egypt.
Always carefully lit and made-up (otherwise she appeared bony), Hepburn's demeanour was sad and romantic. It seemed to suggest she was alone and defenceless, and needed somebody to save her. In film after film, as Donald Spoto shows in his adoring and detailed book, the champion is an older man.
