NAPLES, FLA. -- Patient expectations drive management of male or female pattern hair loss and determine satisfaction with the outcome, Dr. Jerry Shapiro said at a symposium sponsored by the Dermatology Foundation.
Start with patient education, an individualized plan, and compassionate counseling, Dr. Shapiro recommended. "We have to realize that patients are stressed by their condition."
He also suggested that physicians adopt a policy to "promise little and deliver more."
Consider patient age, extent of hair loss, and preference for a topical or systemic agent. Ask the patient if his or her goal is prevention of further hair loss or regrowth.
