SAN DIEGO -- In a surprising twist, a failed phase III vaccine trial has shown promise for surgery in stage IV melanoma.

Investigators stopped recruiting patients to the international randomized, double-blind trial after an interim analysis conducted by an independent Data Safety and Monitoring Board indicated onamelatucel-L (Canvaxin) had little chance of outperforming placebo.

Canvaxin did as well as expected in the trial, but the placebo arm did better than predicted, according to data Dr. Donald L. Morton presented at a symposium sponsored by the Society for Surgical Oncology.
