Twelve hours into the race, and 35 miles out into the wild yonder of the Utah desert, the pain in Jason Magness' feet was beginning to overwhelm him. "It was kind of a burning soreness, punctuated by a searing pain in my heels," he said. Magness, a 30-year-old yoga instructor from Grand Forks, N.D., had acquired blisters on his heels the size of fifty-cent pieces during the initial trekking section of the Primal Quest, an adventure race held June 25 to July 4 in Utah.
