After a month of being "on the rocks" of the East London breakwater, the container ship, Safmarine Agulhas, finally succumbed to the relentless pressure of sea and wind and has begun breaking up, thus settling any faint hopes that the ship might still be pulled off and refloated.
It had been obvious to most observers for several weeks that the ship, which lost engine power soon after sailing from port, had very little chance of ever sailing again.
The 16 800-ton ship was stuck firmly on sand and rocks next to the breakwater and resisted all efforts by the Smit Salvage team, using the powerful tug Smit Amandla (the former John Ross), to pull her clear.
