Fortunately, the first glimpse of the American Tap Dance Orchestra at this performance was not the lasting one. Anonymously costumed in identical white tuxedos and elaborate Native American-inspired masks and headdresses, the dancers were further blended by a unison routine.
While this opening worked in the context of American Landscape, an evening-length piece set to the music of Hoagy Carmichael by artistic director Brenda Bufalino, and also served to illustrate the company's metaphor of an orchestra, what resonated most by the end of the evening were the distinctive performances of individual dancers.
